Room… Outdoor Room

For this project, we had one week to design a room to satisfy the potential of many functions with the consideration for built-in shelving, utilization of the exterior wall for light and expansive views, and access to any outdoor area.

(12’wide and 12’ deep with a six-footwall on three sides). The room is also adjacent to the major living space (along the 14’-6” dimension) and the wall that separates those two rooms should be designed with consideration for both rooms in a creative way. The other wall (14’-6” dimension) is adjacent to the other unit. There is a desire for some physical and/or visual connection between the room and the living space. Privacy is an issue in case the room is used for sleeping purposes. The floor to ceiling (underside of floor plate above) dimension is 10’. The outdoor space is meant to be an extension of the indoor room and should be considered an “outdoor room” –thus the design is as important as the design of the indoor room. There is a five-foot setback from the rear wall required for any structure over 6’ high. The rear wall is also adjacent to a public walkway.

I Designed the room with the intention of allowing for the potential of a variety of uses, with attention to the potential patterns of living that may take place within the room and adjacent living space, and use of materials, as well as how all architectural elements may contribute in a positive way to a design.

The furniture of the room has been chosen to allow the room to transform from a bedroom to an office. the furniture place at the north of the wall is a desk and bookshelf that transforms into a murphy bed.
